A Goal For 2012

I kinda stink at New Year's resolutions* and therefore, like most people, don't really like to make any. But at the same time, I think the beginning of a new year (which it still kind of is, right?) is a nice opportunity to re-assess some aspects of your life and make room for improvement.

In the past few years I've made New Year's goals instead of resolutions, avoiding specific actions and focusing instead on broader personal changes. So here's my adage for 2012:

Some situations just plain suck. Like on Wednesday, when I was so stoked to go to spinning class with cute trainer and I got to the gym one minute too late and all the cards for the class had already been given out (first world problems, I know). Or when I booked plane tickets for the wrong day and the rescheduling fee was more than the tickets originally cost. Or when we found out that after four weeks of being in the shop, our camera lens still hasn't been fixed and the price to do so will be double what we were told to expect.

It's very easy to sulk and get all snippity when things like that occur (I throw a mean pity party), but I started to notice that when I do that, I just end up feeling worse. So what's the point? My goal this year is to make the best of it. Make the best of a crappy situation. So I missed spinning class. I rebounded and went to Bauch-Beine-Po (abs-thighs-butt :) instead! So I screwed up our Paris tickets (sorry again, sister!) I wasn't about to cancel the trip, so I sucked it up and paid the fee. Next time, I'll do it with a laugh and a saracastic comment about my ineptitude at reading calendars. And as for our camera lens - hey, at least it's fixable! There are worse things to lose than a couple hundred euros.

So that's it, that's the one goal I'm setting and plan on sticking to. I'll be checking in here each month with a list of crappy situations that I made the best of, no matter how mundane.

What do you want to get out of 2012?

*I know I said at the beginning of the week that I was finally caught up with the times, but really, I'm still kind of lagging. Better late than never though, right?

  1. I love this idea and did something similar last year. I made simple goals like be happy, eat better, work on building my company and enjoy my job more. I think it really helps you do a better job at the "resolution" when it's not something specific. It sounds like you're on the right track! Good luck!
