My Weekend in Pictures

We got a visit from my favorite little wee munchkin this weekend - Charlie! Accompanied, of course, by my other favorite person, his momma, Emily, and a whole crew they brought with - Artur and both of Emily's parents.

On Friday, we met up after work to watch the first soccer game of the EM (European Soccer Championships) while enjoying some Mexican food before heading to Prater beer garden for a couple more drinks in the amazing weather that magically appeared just for the weekend (thanks for bringing it with, Em!).

Micha and Charlie meet at last! They were instant friends | Love that belly

We had a long, leisurely brunch at Morgenland on Saturday, and then, since Em's parents had never been to Berlin before, meandered through the different sights of Kreuzberg...

...First we headed to Victoriapark for a visit to the top of the Kreuzberg...

Look at that chubby arm! I love the chub!

...then we made our way down Bergmannstraße to the Markthalle, where Charlie was the only one who ended up getting a treat (can't say I was jealous of his food, though ;)...

More carrots, please!

...then we got back in the cars, me with half the troop in Micha's car - yup, I drove a baby for the first time ever! kind of terrifiying - and him with the other half in a DriveNow car for a quick driving tour of City West (which was easier said than done considering half the streets were closed for the EM and Velothon) and a pit stop at Café am Neuen See in the Tiergarten.

Emily and I prefer to match outfits whenever possible (Also, this may be the only pic of the two of us together this weekend - why do we suck at taking pictures together?!)

Chubby chubby legs!

You can't tell here, but Micha had bird poop as well as baby drool on him by this point. As did I, ridiculously enough.

Charlie did his best to try and steal Micha's watch | Dad's teaching the little man well

Classic expressions

Charlie and Grandma - pretending to give babies beer never gets old (this time it's Grandpa's hand!)

We then rounded out the day by watching the Germany-Portugal game outdoors at Bar Babette. Well, the boys watched. Emily and I chatted and laughed and drank...and chatted some more.

Sadly, they all had to take a train at noon on Sunday to make it back to Munich and Salzburg, so instead of getting another day witht hem, we spent the rest of our weekend lazing around the house - Micha read the news and watched soccer and I read an absurd amount of pages of A Game of Thrones (and I'm still barely halfway through!). Ahhh, nothing better than Sundays at home with the windows open and the sun shining through, let me tell ya.

pssst! Some more pictures from the weekend by Emily over here!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday friends! We've had a little bit of an eventful few days down here, most noticeably Wednesday night when I found an injured baby bird on the sidewalk outside of work! Poor little guy was upside down and flopping around, and after trying to find someone to help him, I called F and told him I know I know, we have two kittens, but I have to bring the baby bird home! (Apparently the little bird was the second one to fall out of a nest recently.) Once at home, we put him in a small box with some towels and newspaper, fed him water from a mini kitten bottle, and let him rest the night in our closet with the light on. The next day my vet told me about a wild bird sanctuary in Miami (Pelican Harbor, if you're interested), so we rushed him over there. He seemed to be doing much better in the morning, flopping around, trying to test out his wings, squawking at me, so I'm hoping he--who we named Clark in our short time with him--is doing well and can be released soon! Fly on, little Clark!

As for the weekend, Sunday is F's little niece's 1st birthday, so a champagne-filled poolside celebration is in order--as well as some European soccer Cup watching, but of course. What are you up to this weekend?

Hope you have a lovely and restful few days off and we'll see you back here next week!

Inspired By...Ray Bradbury

This is a slightly different Inspired By post, but I had to say something about the fact that one of my favorite and one of the most inspiring authors (at least, to me), Ray Bradbury, died today. I went through a bit of a science fiction phase when I was younger and fell in with Bradbury's work. Of course Fahrenheit 451 is genius, but I remember The Martian Chronicles simply blowing my mind. The scope of it all, and the creativity! And I've always been mesmerized by Bradbury's poetic prose. It's some of the most beautiful--at times, it really is poetry--made more amazing by the fact that he wrote about scientific and fantastic subject matter. Anyways, let me get over my English major blather and just say that his stories, his writing, and his visions for the future were inspiring to writers and non-writers alike, and will be sorely missed.

Kerstin's Baby Shower

So let's return to Kerstin's baby shower today, because I have so many (maybe too many) fun pictures to share from it!

I tried, this time around, to limit the amount of crafty projects I would work on for the shower because, well, I always overextend myself with projects and that combined with the fact that I usually procrastinate everything until the last minute equals bad news. So early on I decided that I was going to decorate with a bajillion balloons (I literally ordered 250 but Micha talked some sense into me and we ended up hanging up less than half of that. Which is still over 100 balloons.) and colorful goodies from Papermash, my go-to party supply source (they have a great selection, great prices, and ridiculously fast shipping within Europe!).

Because I really really really wanted to buy these make-your-won banners, I let the included colors decide my color scheme, which had originally been ombré pink (glad I didn't stick with just that). So springy pink, blue, green, and yellow it was.

Drinks included Sekt with elderflower syrup and mint and spiked raspberry lemonade, with alcohol-free versions of each well

My favorite moment of the whole day was when Kerstin first walked in to our giant surprise room full of girls. Her husband, Hendryk, and I had schemed to get her to our place by inviting the two of them over to grill on the balcony on that lovely Sunday. We were both embarassingly nervous that she would catch on and totally jittery that whole morning (silly, right?). Once they arrived, Micha was still there and while the men chatted in the kitchen, I managed (with shaky hands) to casually guide Kerstin over to our living room where everyone was hiding behind the closed door. And when it opened, they all blew/threw streamers and should "Überasschung" at her! Thankfully for us, Micha rushed right in to capture the great moment.

Happy, teary hugs all around

I asked Kerstin a few days later what she thought about the surprise and if she had even been surprised and, happily, she responded that, yup, she 100% was and hadn't had a clue that we'd been planning this for over two months. (Go us!) Then I asked her what she'd thought when she arrived at our apartment and she said, "well, I thought it was weird that all the doors were closed, but you know, it happens. And then I saw the balloons" (there's a little window in our living room door that I'd completely forgotten about!) "but I just figured, 'oh, it's Nicole. That's not that strange for her.'" (She knows me well...)

Bump silhouette (like how she unknowingly matched her dress to the decor?)

I did myself a favor and made food and drinks somewhat simple for this party by getting a lot of help from the other girls and by not attempting any ridiculously elaborate recipes, as I'm wont to do. (I'd plotted and plotted how I could whip up an ombré pink cake in time but in the end, let Janett and her sister, who graciously volunteered, do the cake and focused my attention instead on balloons and cocktails. They are now my specialties. I should totally add that to my resumé.)

I'm still bitter at those peonies on the right that didn't open...

Conny, Kerstin's sister, worked for at least an hour on that fruit platter, bless her heart

You like how I also managed to plant myself DIRECTLY next to the bar cart? Yeah, my glass wasn't empty once.

Other than eating and drinking, we also had a few activities planned, which we just kind of started whenever it felt like the conversation came to a lull. Which wasn't very often, cuz these girls are fun.

Instead of decorating onesies - which Janett, as a mother of two wee ones, didn't really like the idea of (onesies just get dirty and moms usually have too many of them anyways, she wisely pointed out) - we decorated two cute stuffed animals, a wiener dog and an owl (which I found at Idee, because I basically lived at that store for the three weeks leading up to the shower). Baby sure was lucky to have such a creative group of girlies making these adorable toys for her. I can't wait to hear which one ends up her favorite. (I hope the wiener dog because he's my favorite. Though mullet owl is pretty sweet too...)

Deep in wiener-dog-and-owl-decorating concentration

The near finished product!

We also ended up blindfolding poor Kerstin twice - she's such a trooper. The first time, she had to take a baby product in her hand and guess what it was, which she was insanely good it. This included things such as nursing pads, changing table pads, sippy cups, q-tips, you name it. The lucky momma-to-be then got to keep everything she guessed right, which was, in fact, everything! If that's not prepared, then I don't know what is...

And for the final game, Hendryk ended up getting back earlier than expected (with Micha, who nearly fell asleep instead of joining in on the fun :), so we made him get in on the blindfold-action too. Then the lucky soon-to-be parents got to taste four different kinds of oh-so-delicious baby food and guess what the flavors were.

They have no idea what (not-at-all) deliciousness they're in for...

Such troopers!

Their fave? Apple peach. Their least fave? Parsnip. Which they almost couldn't even choke down it was that nasty.

So that's it! I had a grand time and am eager to see who I'll get to plan a baby shower for next...though in the meantime, I totally can't wait for Kerstin's little munchkin to arrive so soon! Eek! Gotta get to work on my favorite auntie bribes for babies...

My Weekend in Pictures

On Friday we had planned on heading westwards to a jazz bar, but ended up never making it out of Prenzl'berg (damn that gloomy weather) and enjoying a crazy huge meal of Brazilian food - mostly meat, Micha's favorite - instead. Plus cocktails and a flaming pineapple, so I'll just go ahead and call it a win for me too.

That's right, I found the headquarters of Rammstein. FOR REAL. Cuz strange '90s hard rock bands need that kinda thing.

That liquored up flaming pineapple was delicious | The dirty martini almost was...

On Saturday we belatedly celebrated Stefan's birthday with some cookies, evening Thai food, beer, and a freakishly lot of talk about the pros and cons of dryers (they're pro, we're con. Only because we don't have one, though...)

Birthday cookies, before and after

Wee Mara took a break from being held - her favorite past time - for a nap | Wegebier (our on-the-way beers)

I'm almost embarassed to admit how we spent our Saturday night except for the fact that I know my mother would have totally loved it. (Ok, now I am truly embarassed...) When we got home, we had intended to whip up some cocktails and watch entirely too many episodes of Friends but - oh yes, it gets even more thrilling! - when I turned on the TV, I found a 3-hour long ABBA documentary on! If it hadn't been for the movie Mamma Mia, I would have never even thought twice about watching anything about ABBA, but, well, that movie flat out rocks. And so ABBA documentary it was for our Saturday night. (Well, mine. Micha fell promptly asleep as soon as they started to play Chiquitita and talk about divorces.)

You'll truly think we live a thrilling life when you hear about our Sunday organizing our damn bedroom but you have no idea how much this bedroom plagues me. Natalie does. I can't stand it and that's just a sad state to live in. So I finally brought some order to the room - because admittedly, most of the clutter is mine - and it's such a lovely breath of fresh air now to walk into that room and find free space!

Bedroom organizing in progress, which had/has become our storage place for any random items - bikes, ladders, roll-away cots, piles and piles of laundry, wrapping paper...

After taking down about 10 cardboard boxes (most imprinted with either the words Amazon or Zalando - gee, I wonder whose those were...), Micha came back up and exclaimed, "I put all but one in the bin. But one I had to leave whole." Then he pointed to the window and said, "take a look at why."

And he even smiled as he pointed out Renate (yes, that's her real name) the ground-level-apartment/courtyard kitty who decided to make the box her new toy. (This is a breakthrough people. He is the furthest thing from an animal lover!)

My under-the-bed paper box is organized at long last. But I'm not allowed to buy more any kind of paper for a while...

Or yarn. Or knitting supplies of any sort. This box is deep.

To round out my horrendously domestic weekend (hey, it was raining, give me a break!), I'll just show you how kick-you-in-the-pants fantastic our balcony plants are faring now that they actually see at least a little bit of sunshine every day. (ps, comparing them to Natalie's plants in Miami is just plain unfair.)

Some of those tomato plants have even sprouted wee flowers!

The flowers love the teapot, but aren't so sure if they enjoy life in the pipe-hanging pots

The gnome has been helping the late bloomers catch up

Marjoram, parsley, and rosemary (the runt)

Pepper plants and "beans" (randomly received from a coworker so I honestly don't know what they are) | the chives that have survived four winters, aka. my pride and joy

Pretty sure that mint is going to take over the entire balcony soon enough...

The tomatoes that we may or may not still give away.

And after all that excitement, another week of real life begins...

And how was your weekend?

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! I know I've been pretty quiet on the blog this week, but I wanted to stop by and wish you all a happy weekend--hopefully yours is looking better than the gloomy, rainy one we're expecting. Although at this point it looks like I'll be spending it sick in bed, so maybe the weather's just being sympathetic to me, no?

See you here next week for more regularly scheduled posting!
